Meet our partner: Instituto de Historia de Cuba

In 2015, UCLA Library and the Instituto de Historia partnered together to preserve, digitize, and provide online access to valuable historical materials related to Cuba. They are currently digitizing the newspaper La Lucha which began in 1885. Some issues were printed in Spanish and other issues were published in both Spanish and English.

The Cuba Institute of History is dedicated to historical research and the conservation of Cuban patrimony. Founded on May 28, 1987 under the auspices of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party, the principal activity of the IHC is conducting historical research. It is authorized by the Ministry of Higher Education to provide graduate level teaching for masters and doctoral students. IHC regularly hosts colloquiums, symposiums, workshops, in addition to housing historical objects, a specialized library, and a historical archive that contains 1310 linear meters of documents from the 19th and 20th century. Its headquarters are based in Aldama Palace, a gem of Havana's neoclassical architecture.
